After receiving an arc copy of Untamed, I was excited to read what appeared to be an empowering and enlightening memoir. ❤️. Adele raved about the book Untamed by Glennon Doyle on her Instagram page. Yes, I heard it, I’ve been there, done that!

It changed it by confirming beliefs I already had but that I wasn’t quite sure about or confident in, it changed it by offering new perspectives and it changed it because, like most others who read it, I can identify with Glennon Doyle and her honest, relatable and funny insights into serious and complex issues. Some stories merely skim the surface of larger issues, but Doyle revisits them in later sections and digs deeper, using friends and familial references to personify their impact on her life, both past and present. I wrote a review when I was 3/4 of the way done with the book, talking about how hollow and untrue it felt. I’m sure she prefers being content rather than getting rich by singing miserable songs once every four years. The quotes are too perfect. Yes, I heard it, I’ve been there, done that! Untamed by Glennon Doyle has an overall rating of Positive based on 4 book reviews. Spoiler alert: her first 2 books were wrong. I want to give this book to every person I know to read with the hopes that they take away from it what I did which is let. This is a sacred day to me. As someone who suffers from both depression and anxiety, Doyle’s insight into these conditions hit home. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. Nope, it’s not gonna happen! I guess I was expecting this to be more of a memoir rather than a lecture. At the end I include my favorite quotes with a quick discussion on why I chose them. As someone who is happy to share her opinions in an article or via a text message to a friend but would do anything humanly possible to avoid social interaction in person (or on the phone for that matter), Doyle’s honest, yet hilarious observation was one of my fist pump and ‘f*ck yes’ occasions. The overview seemed promising, but I found so much of it repetitive. You believe in the power of women and feminism. Untamed was my first Glennon Doyle read. The quotes are too perfect. We believe all this striving will make us feel alive. I mainly discuss the writing and my thoughts on the quality of the story. What I realised from Untamed is that being honest isn’t a question of right or wrong, instead it’s a question of comfort, and sometimes what I do or say will make me or others uncomfortable but ultimately the truth is what matters most.

The broad claims about gender inequality or cultural expectations are not new or groundbreaking; I don't mean that they shouldn't be written about (actually I think the exact opposite), but Doyle isn't adding any s. I was really disappointed by this book, especially after seeing such great reviews everywhere. For Glennon Doyle, Self-Care Is Not Wearing Makeup—Or Pants. Recent photos show her bronzed and beaming – the very picture of post-Goop bliss. YES! I couldn't even finish it, all I could think of was "this white lady is trying to convince me she finally got it all right, but truth is she needs more therapy and I see another divorce coming", I know authors who write books like this polish up conversations that they recount in order to make them more coherent and meaningful in the rear view mirror.

Readers looking for this will be left wanting and personally, I felt as though instead of reconciling her faith, she has traded it for a brand of moralistic therapeutic deism. But the popularity of Doyle’s work means that she is clearly meeting the needs of lots of people.
